what tips would you give a newbie to this sketching/coloring?

Well, I'm not sure how much help I can be. I laid down basic colors on a layer in photoshop, then played around with some textures and overlays in a separate layer, changed some layer modes and filters until I liked it. Not much science to it I'm afraid.
I do mostly black and white, so anything color I do is always experimentation. That would probably be the best advice I can give: Don't be afraid to experiment until you find something you like! Hope that helps!
